250 MB is not enough space considering the forum/CMS software can take anywheres between 2 or 3 - 5 or 15 MB. Then you have to account for the database itself as well as attachments. GE's database I believe with attachments eats up a little over a gig by checking the ACP.
1 - 3 gigs is what I need, even if they had a small or medium sized ad banner at the top, that would suffice.
A lot of these hosts use this stupid control panel software which makes me unable to upload certain mods or files since it spits a filetype is not allowed error back. Also they disable PHP Sendmail so if I am running a forum, users won't be able to activate their registration because the conformation email would never arrive.
Honestly if I had the money right now I'd pay for hosting, but since I don't I'm stuck with a pretty limited amount of.
Also if I could host it on my computer I would do that as well, but unfortunately I am unable to on satellite internet not just because of bandwidth restrictions but because of the fact my PC isn't accessible externally through the internet from a remote location because of the absence of a static ip and the fact everything through satellite is very heavily Nat's or routed and I'm on a shared ip with other subscribers.

The 250 MB plans were never originally designed to suport a forum. They were tailored to fit a blog or a small personal site while remaining as affordable as possible. It's supposed to be as bare bones as you can get while still qualifying as "useful" webspace.
With some of the changes we're implementing, you'll be able to get a plan with 1 GB of space starting at $6/mo. 750 GB drives are much more available to us than they were four years ago when we had originally set our servers up. This time around, we took large, redundant storage into account. All the servers are using 750 GB drives in their RAID arrays, now.
