Although... gradient is not always the best. Pay attention to the surface of the object you are coloring... and at least try to get the material right. If you gradient shade it, it may feel... ehh... not like the surface it should have.

Some surfaces are not as smooth as others... and... ehh... here's a good example: clothings vs metal!
For metal, the shading is insanely wide... and you can accurately capture just about ANY metallic surface with just gradient. Clothings, on the other hand, are kind of... grainy. The shadows on those surfaces are more abrupt and the contrast is quite high, especially at folds.
Mmm... just thought I'd point that out for ya.
