I think you're alluding to posts made on some tech forums about a 500% increase in performance for enabling Adaptive AA. From what I saw, the guy was getting 5 fps in Oblivion before the beta drivers when he enabled AA + Adaptive AA. That 500% increase made his performance jump to 25 fps. AA and Adaptive AA aren't the same things.
Anyways, it was well known that x2900 cards had performance issues with Adaptive AA and it seems to be fixed in the 7.8 beta's. Nvidia's cards don't have the same issues with their Transparency AA modes and their performance with it enabled didn't dip into the single digits.
