Don't know what Hamachi is, if by Xkai you mean XLink Kai, then XLink Kai is completely legal. Check out the link I posted. Bungie even posted this information on their site (people were playing Halo 1 Xbox over these programs online using the system link feature). It's not a grey area. It's a different way to play online. And how are they not practical? They work fine. I never have any trouble with them. I don't really use them to often now since I have Xbox Live.
