Both those articles talk about the same benchmarks done by Falcon West which was little more than marketing for one of their complete systems build with a x2900xt 1gig. More reputable reviews around the web has already shown the 1 gig r600 to perform roughly the same at similar clock speeds to it's 512 meg brethen and still less than the 8800gtx/ultra in most games.

It isn't. Even the 1 gig x2900xt isn't officially released by AMD. It was given up to AIB's to decide if they wanted to slap on 1 gig GDDR4 ram on the same core and release them.
AMD employees from various sites has also been on record to state that they won't be competing at the ultra high end this round(8800gtx/ultra). With Nvidia preparing for their G9x cards in November, they should focus more on how they will compete with that than with 10 month old cards from Nvidia.
