The only way to tell is with the code on the side of the box, though this method is becoming a little less of a sure method. You can see details at
QJ.net. Essentially, you want 2.71 firmware or lower if possible, as 2.80-3.03 requires the use of an unpatched copy of GTA Liberty City Stories to downgrade (and they are getting harder to find). 3.10 and higher have no downgrader available at the moment, and it may be quite some time before there will be one (if ever). The reason you need to be able to downgrade is custom firmware can only be installed while being in 1.50 firmware.
