Buy and ATI card, buy and Nvidia card, there's usually little difference. I prefer Nvidia because it has more options. But it really doesn't matter.

The only thing you really NEED to avoid is Nvidia's FX series - but that's really long gone. ATI's newest card has been compared to the FX, but at least they priced it simialar to a card in it's performance category (the 8800GS) and didn't tell people it was equal to the top-of the line. It pretty much is as fast as an 8800GS, except it doesn't seem to do as well on anti-aliasing. So, currently for midrange I'd go for an 8800GS or an 8600 GT. There's little reason not to buy a DX10 card if you can.

for the record this is not a biased view, ive had more ATi cards than i have Nvidia, im just not blind to the facts that are right infront of me.
It has equal performance to Nvidia's upper-mid-range card, and it's priced equally to that too. It squashes Nvidia's mid-range cards. No one has budget cards out yet.

ATI just hasn't put anything out to compete with the GTX - and I don't hear of any plans too. There's nothing wrong with that. There's little money be made on the ultra-high end anyway.
