Update
Out of desperation :-( , I went onto the Dell support site and downloaded the latest firmware upgrade for my DVD/CDRW. and... It worked! :-) Now I can rip most ISOs and get on with grappling with the plugin configurations...
Resident Evil 3 and Crash Bandicoot 1 & 2 play perfectly - great gfx! 
If you are having a similar problem, try www.dell.com - support section. If you are not using a Dell - try the equipment manufacturer's homepage.
