Actually theryre not that high.. you can run vista basic on a p3 1ghz with a 64 meg video vard.. i did for a year and a half. As far as system requirements, Vista runs DirectX9 applications on the whole 9 % slower than running them in XP. People said that 98 was faster than XP , then they were eating their words when direct9 hardware was released and people saw xp's potential. Vista runs fine, if you want the aero interface have a good graphics card. My advice to you is get a minimum wage job and buy a 7600GS to get you through till the directx10 cards a cheaper. And ram prices are falling so as long as you have a mid range processor you are okay. Or you can always dual boot with OSx86., LOL
